More On G-8 Open Data Conference

More On G-8 Open Data Conference. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Line On Agriculture.

The G-8 Open Data Conference wrapped up yesterday and while not all participants were completely open to the idea of sharing their data the conference has been deemed a success. USDA Chief Scientist Dr. Catherine Woteki talked about the results of the conference.

WOTEKI: We’ve not only had representation from the G-8 countries here, we have representation from the New Alliance countries in Africa along with several other countries that have very active ag research programs.

The meeting was held at the World Bank on Monday and Tuesday.

WOTEKI: We heard a whole series of presentations about all the different kinds of data that are being made available through the use of the internet these days. The United States made the big announcement that we have created a new community for data that relates to food and agriculture and natural resources and rural communities.

That site is data.gov.

WOTEKI: There are now 350 data sets there available for use and development of new applications. The G-8 countries announced that they have put out into the public plans for how we’re going to continue making our research data and other statistical data that we collect available.

That’s today’s Line On Agriculture. I’m Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
