My wife and I are movie fans, especially old movies and of course I am very partial to westerns. But try as I might I cannot really think of a movie, modern or old, that really showed the ag industry in a positive light. Well that might be about to change. Oscar and Emmy award winning filmmaker James Moll has teamed up with the U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance to produce a feature-length documentary on the next generation of American farmers and ranchers.

MOLL: There are in fact quite a few people today who are going on higher education and then coming back to their farms and ranches and that was very interesting to me. Also the new technologies and methods that are being employed, these are things that I would like to explore. I decided to focus on 5 twenty somethings and that would be the way into farming and ranching today.

Moll chose this focus from the research he conducted on farming and ranching today and the issues facing farmers and ranchers. He discovered how the farming and ranching population today is aging. He says USFRA has been nothing but supportive on this project and has allowed him to make his own film in his own way. His goal is to represent farmers and ranchers from their own perspective and with their “own voices.” Moll expects the film to be completed within the next year.

That’s today’s Line On Agriculture. I’m Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
