Spring Wheat Recommendations

I’m KayDee Gilkey with the Northwest Farm and Ranch Report.

Many of the Pacific Northwest farmers are busy working in their fields. Don Drader Syngenta agronomy service representative, shares some recommendations for the spring wheat planting.

Drader: “Soil preparation and fertility is very important. Proper seed selection is very important -- make sure that you are getting the varieties that are the best for your growing areas. Make sure that they are treated with a good seed care product like Cruiser Max or Vibrance.”

Drader says that here in the Pacific Northwest many wheat growers use treated seed due to disease and insect pressures.

Drader: “So growers are in tune to the diseases out there or the wire worm pressures so a lot of them are using a seed treatment that contains both an insecticide and a fungicide.” ?
He continues.

Drader: “Then also think ahead about diseases and insects when making their herbicide applications as they should be thinking of or considering a application of a fungicide like Quilt or Tilt. Then to maximize the yield potential think about making a fungicide application at full flag leaf -- that is also going to give them protection from rust but it is also going to allow that plant to maximize its yield potential when they are using a product like Quilt.”

Drader reminds winter wheat growers to be ever vigilant of possible rust in their fields.

Drader: “They need to be scouting it now because it could be a host for rust which could affect their fields and their spring wheat fields.”
