3-1 SS Fergie Moose
The founding concept behind Sportsmen’s Spotlight.
When we started doing Sportsmen’s Spotlight, it was after a conversation with my boss Kelly Allen and his wonderful son Tommy, quite candidly over a couple of beers on a beautiful sunny day. I pitched the idea to Kelly and Tommy saying that I love sitting around in campsites or lodges and listening to the wonderful stories woven by fellow outdoorsmen. Those are not like TV stories complete with video. These are stories that are told and can play out in the theater of the mind. So it is with a hall of aim pitcher. I had a wonderful opportunity to sit around the campfire with hall of fame pitcher Ferguson Jenkins at 9300 feet at an outfitter in Colorado. Fergie was reminiscing about some of the hunting experiences that he had had over the years. Like so many of us, he didn’t have any super thrilling experiences to share, but I loved his philosophy about being a true outdoorsman. “I was in Alaska fishing for king salmon. The guys asked me if I want to go moose hunting for a couple of days. I said okay but I have to buy a license. The guide loaned me a gun. So we went and surprisingly enough we ran across a couple of grizzlies that were fishing in a stream. We sat back and just watched and they didn’t even bother us. So it ended up that we didn’t give a Moose but we saw some pretty big brown bears, I guess they are considered grizzlies when they move from one area to another but it was quite an experience seeing how big these animals are. So that was one experience. Another time I was hunting in Michigan just outside of Traverse City near Gaylord and I shot a nice buck there. You get the opportunity to go and who knows whether you are going to get lucky or not but you are out doing what you like to do best, and that is to hunt.”
