3-4 SS Winter Chukar
A look back at a chat that I had with one of my favorite hunting buddies.
Jody Olson is an avid chukar hunter, for several primary reasons. First, he’s a died-in-the-wool outdoorsman and literally savors the opportunity to be out hunting throughout the entire Northwest. He’s also an extremely enthusiastic dog man who hunts with his German shorthairs...which he claims to be the best dogs in the world for chukars. I might point out that both his dogs are house pets as well and Jody says they fill that role so well that they are extremely highly ranked members of the family. I called Jody up in mid January to get his take on how the chukar season had been compared to the last couple of years. Remember, there was quite a cold snap in January throughout the Northwest. “Chukars are open through January 31st in Idaho and Oregon and it has been a decent year, about an average year. We have had 2 or 3 slim years and it was nice to have good bird counts earlier this year. But as I see my friends around town, everyone has concluded that it’s probably not worth it to go out given the combination of heavy snow and frigid cold although today is a little warmer so you might have piqued my interest.
