Sweet Cherry Growth Analysis

Sweet Cherry Growth Analysis

Sweet Cherry Growth Analysis. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

Dr. Todd Einhorn, Associate Professor and Horticulture Specialist with OSU’s Research and Extension Center recently spent some time talking to growers about sweet cherry growth analysis being done.

EINHORN: We haad a project for a few years looking at the effects of crop load on fruit size and as we were setting up experiments and studies to look at these effects we realized quickly until you had the context for growth, a really nice detailed growth analysis, can you really understand when limitations occur to fruit growth, how we might correct them.

Einhorn talks about the importance of getting this information early.

EINHORN: Early and accurate estimation of fruit set and potential of fruit size is one thing we’re really excited to get out of a detailed growth analysis. Much earlier in terms of a crop estimation than is currently being done. The knowledge for potential crop size could facilitate the application of preemptive crop management strategies and this is important because what we’ve noticed in the crop load work that we’ve done is when heavy fruit set occurs fruit size is sacrificed really early.

He says as quickly as 30 days after bloom there is already an effect.

EINHORN: The sooner we’re able to get a real estimate on the crop load could really inform us on managing that crop load to avoid those fruit size losses.

That’s today’s Fruit Grower Report. I’m Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
