Partnership Agreement Awards

Partnership Agreement Awards

On Wednesday the USDA’s Risk Management Agency Spokane Regional Office announced over $697 thousand in partnership agreement awards to be issued throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska for the support of education and outreach to small and historically underserved farmers and ranchers. Risk Management Specialist Jo Lynne Seufer talks about the diversity of the partnership agreement applicants.

SEUFER: You know we really have gotten some great applications the past eleven years, but this year they really came from several different entities - that being private non-profits, commodity groups, our land grant universities, and community colleges.

Among the awardees are the Washington Department of Agriculture, the Seattle Tilth Association, WSU, and the Organic Seed Alliance. Seufer explains what some of the approved partnership projects will entail.

SEUFER: A lot of those will help educate farmers and ranchers to be better equipped to address the many risk management related challenges they face every day on their farms and ranches. There will be workshops and webinars and online tools to help farmers better manage their risk, whether their marketing, financial, production, or human resource and legal risks. We got a lot of partnerships that are going to serve everything from small farmers, to ranchers, to niche farmers growing specialty crops or niche livestock, whether that be goats or lambs. And then also we have one partnership that’s gonna reach out and serve some Alaskan farmers, as well as many minorities and women farmers throughout the four states.
