11-21 SS Fergie

11-21 SS Fergie

Ferguson Jenkins stands 6 foot 5 and was one of the best righthanders that big-league baseball ever had. The interesting thing is that he was born in Chatham, Ontario Canada. Not that many baseball players come out of Canada and make it to the bigs. Not only did Fergie accomplish that, but after a tremendous career with the Cubs, Rangers, Red Sox and Phillies, Fergie has been inducted into the Hall of Fame. I caught up with him at Rocking H Outfitters in Colorado. “I was 9 or 10 years old and my father took me either squirrel hunting or cottontail hunting With a .22. I always thought it was a great opportunity to get into the outdoors in the fall. Once I really got into it at the age of 15 to 16, I really enjoyed hunting. Southern Ontario have a lot of ducks too. It was a pretty good flyway. Canvas backs, redheads, bluebells and mallards especially. And geese went through from time to time but I was mostly  a big duck hunter. You are retired after an illustrious career in the bigs, how often do you hunt these days and what kind of hunting do you like? I have had a charity for the last 15 years in St. Catherine’s, Ontario so what I do is sometimes in October I go to Illinois and set up some new ground blinds or some stands but then I had the opportunity to come here to Colorado and hunt elk so it’s about a 2 month period from October to November and I enjoy it.”
