U.S. Potatoes Well Positioned to Supply International Markets

I’m KayDee Gilkey with the U.S. Potato Update.

For the recently completed marketing year, the volume of US potato and potato product exports grew 10 percent. This is equal to 16 percent of total US potato sales for the year.

This marketing year looks promising as well as John Toaspern, United States Potato Board Vice President for International Marketing explains.

Toaspern: “We are in a position to really take advantage of demand in the international marketplace which we see continuing to expand. The economic recovery throughout Asia continues. More and more restaurants that serve potatoes and potato product are being opened up. Through our marketing efforts more and more of different types of restaurants that traditionally didn’t serve potatoes or potato products are starting to do so. We are also opening up other channels. With the increase in demand and the U.S. currency still being very competitive and then our supply setting us up to take advantage of these marketing opportunities. We are looking forward to another record year here in the current marketing year.”

Toespern says the international market provides great opportunity to market the increase of U.S. potato supply.
