As growers prepare to plant winter wheat this fall - Chad Effertz who is the Development Manager for Arysta LifeScience Herbicide says growers need to watch out for Downy Brome - which he considers to be one of the most concerning weeds: “Concerning with winter wheat because it has the same life cycle it likes to emerge in the fall right along with your winter wheat overwinter and continue to even grow over the winter months and come spring time it will really take over and impact your winter wheat crop so downy brome is definitely want to watch because its life cycle is so similar to winter wheat”

Effertz says the biggest issue with Downy Brome is that it competes with the crop for moisture and nutrients. If Downy Brome emerges within the first two weeks of the winter wheat - it has five-times more impact on yield than Downy Brome that emerges after the crop. That’s why Effertz says it is important to control the weed early on by using fall and pre-plant glyphosate applications: “One of the products we have been utilizing is Prepare. Use Prepare in combination with a d glyphosate burn down in the fall. and what Prepare does when it gets in the soil is it has residual activity on Brome.
