More Information About Direct Marketing Series of Workshops

Yesterday we visited with Tom Platt, Lincoln County’s Area Extension Agent, about an upcoming series of workshops for livestock producers who are interested in pursuing direct marketing of their meat to the consumer. Today, we’ll learn more about the first two different seminars topics. I’m KayDee Gilkey with Open Range.

The first workshop will be held in Grand Coulee, Washington in early November. Platt shares what that day’s topics will be.

Platt: “The first workshop is about planning, so that you can deal with contingencies when they occur and they always occur. So we are going to spend about the half of the workshop talking about business planning which includes development of a financial plan, a marketing plan, an assessment of labor requirements, market access. And then the second half of the workshop will be devoted to strategies for marketing.”

The second December workshop will be held in Soap Lake.

Platt: “It addresses common risks inherent in livestock finishing business primarily. So this would price risk, risk of production performance, meat quality, livestock quality. And then a panel of people in the direct marketing meat business who have a wealth of experience from various places throughout the Northwest are going to talk about their operations and the risks they think are most important to manage.”

Platt says that attendees must attend all four workshops in the series. To learn more about this series of workshops and register, go to http://livestocktopics.wsu.edu.
