9-7 SS Dams and Fish

The removal of dams and the impact on steelhead and salmon.

In a recent conversation with regular correspondent Josh Mills, he reveled over the impact and historical significance in conjunction with the removal of 2 dams. “Two amazing historic events have happened in the last couple of months… The removal of 2 dams. One the Elwha as well as the Condit dam on the White Salmon River. Some of the most amazing things that have happened is that as the reservoirs have drained behind them and as the rivers are restoring to their state, this year, faster than anybody had ever anticipated, steelhead and salmon are now recolonizing waters that they have not touched in over 100 years in some cases. There has been footage of spawning pairs of steelhead on some of the upper reaches of the Elwha which people believe is some of the most productive spawning habitat still left because it is within the Olympic Peninsula National Park and then the Condit dam on the White Salmon River there are pictures of steelhead and salmon leaping up the falls right now and it is remarkable because here is something that has been denied for over 100 years in some cases. Now the biological imprint of these fish is telling them to go up the river to where their ancestors came from. So given the chance the fish are trying to do what nature intended them to do, that is swim upstream and plant their eggs. It is remarkable to see after just months of dam removal.
