Pulse Market Forecast
We spoke yesterday with Tim McGreevy of the U.S. Dry Pea & Lentil Council about how things were shaping up this year for pulse producers here in the Pacific Northwest. Today McGreevy talks about what future prices might be for pulse crops.
MCGREEVY: Prices have been pretty strong actually, and as we are moving into the harvest season there’s some drought problems in the Indian sub-continent - some dry weather there that’s had a big affect.
McGreevy explains why that has such an affect on the pulse market.
MCGREEVY: They’re the largest pulse producing region in the world actually, the Indian subcontinent - India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, they’re huge pulse producers. And of course huge pulse consumers.
Unlike corn prices, pulse prices are staying steady.
MCGREEVY: So far prices have been firm. We haven’t seen our prices sky rocket like we’ve seen in corn and wheat and soybeans, but we have had a pretty firm undertone and some slight upticks. But we didn’t ever see a huge drop off either. So we’ve had pretty strong pricing here over the past year, and we expect that we’ll see some pretty firm prices as we head into harvest.
