7-2 FB Whacky Weather

Wacky weather has had an effect on some of the crops this spring.

Eastern Idaho potato growers have had their challenges this spring. What’s the old phrase? Through sleet, through hail, through ice and snow and of course that is a reference to our fine members of the Postal Service bringing us our mail. But we could certainly borrow some of that rhetoric for growers. Ritchey Toev It is a potato grower from Aberdeen and he figures about 100,000  potato acres have been affected by the frost. But it doesn’t stop there. Here’s Mark Duffin, Executive Director of the Idaho Sugarbeet Growers Association: “We have had a tough spring I will give you that. The wind has caused problems in several of our growing areas and we had to read plant about 16% of the crop from what I saw. Sometimes it was even more than once because mostly winds and sometimes a little bit of frost and hail but it’s been a tough, windy spring. But overall there is a pretty good crop coming in and it is progressing pretty well, with warm days like today, it should be progressing. The estimates are that it should be a good crop coming but you never know until it’s out of the ground and processed.
