National College Rodeo Title Goes to Walla Walla Warriors!
Hi, I’m Susan Allen. If you travel through Texas you just feel it. Rodeo and the cowboy way is deeply embedded throughout both urban and rural culture. So if you grow in the Northwest with a passion for the sport be it barrel racing, roping, steer tripping… you dream of heading to Texas for college. Meaning the recent accomplishmentsof our Northwest cowboys and their coaches is pretty dang amazing! I’ll tell you about it when Open Range returns. If you aren’t involved in rodeo you probably don’t know that in many universities, college rodeo is a sanctioned sport with team and individual events. Universites like Texas A @ M heavily recruit and offer lucrative scholarships. Some of our community colleges for instance, Blue Mountain and Walla Walla and many of our state Universities have rodeo teams and or clubs but because the Northwest isn’t a Mecca for rodeo it’s hard for our contestants to compete without the funding and coaches available in rodeo rich regions. Despite that, and all the universities that sent contestants to the college national finals last week in Casper Wyoming the Walla Walla Community College men’s team won with the national title and the coveted men’s all around went to Bryce Palmer also from Walla Walla.Texas Tech won the women’s team award . What a sweep, what an accomplishment for the Walla Walla Warriors against the big Land Grants and what a tribute to our own very special Northwest cowboys culture.
