The Humane Society of the United States is pushing the Egg Products Inspection Act Amendments that will dictate on-farm production practices. The National Pork Producers Council opposes the bill because it sets a dangerous precedent for allowing the federal government to tell farmers how to raise and care for their animals. NPPC Board Member and Pork Producer Bill Luckey says NPPC is afraid this agenda will trickle down to other commodities to set production standards. “Whether it be cattle, poultry, hogs, we are in those barns all the time, and we know how these animals react and we know what we’re doing. We need to protect this from happening in our industry because we are the ones who are taking care of those animals.”

Luckey says a lot of what’s going on right now is centered on emotions instead of science. He says producers have to get out and tell their story of what they do and why they do it. Luckey says the producers are the ones who know what’s going on the best. Special interest groups have their own agendas - he says - but improvements to production systems happen over time - not overnight. The industry will always be evolving - Luckey says - because producers are always striving to improve and provide the best for their consumers.
