4-4 SS Fish Calendar

When do you fish for steelhead and when don’t you? We're going to have a fishing calendar for you provided by you know who. Some of you might be wondering about whether or not you can fish for steelhead in the winter and if so how much of the winter? Does that include coming in the spring like now? Here’s Josh Mills. “The season for them, I mean I caught my earliest one in the Clearwater River once on July 17 and we will fish for them all the way through winter because these fish do not spawn until March or April usually. I stopped fishing for this run in February because once you get into March and April, the tendency is that these fish are staging to spawn, they are young, they are waiting to drop eggs and for the males to come along and fertilize. But some of these fish you can fish up till April, for example the Salmon River fish that have climbed all the way into Idaho, way into Idaho and close to Montana. There are different runs of fish on the coastal rivers that have different timing. Over in the Olympic Peninsula there are rivers that are well-known and renowned for their winter run fish. They will run anywhere from November through March. So that’s kind of the window for winter fish. Then there are some spring fish. For the most part there is a September to February window that we fish. It just depends on how much clothing you are willing to wear and how many frozen feet you can stand.
