Marketing Apples

Marketing Apples. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

We all see the efforts of the Washington Apple Commission here in the northwest when it comes to apples but what about in other markets? Rebecca Lyons, Export Marketing Manager for the Washington Apple Commission talks about a promotion they are involved with in Mexico.

LYONS: This is actually the second year of this partnership between Washington Apples, Northwest Pears, California table grapes and the children’s television program Lazy Town. Pretty much all the young kids are familiar with this television show. It features a superhero who’s name is Sportacus and he goes around trying to get kids to eat healthy.

Typical kids fare but the tie-in to northwest fruit has been a positive one.

LYONS: And it great because it’s like the only kids television show that features produce in a healthy way and without getting preachy. And what we were able to do is get a grant from the USDA to partner with the Lazy Town folks to do a promotion down in Mexico which is our largest export market and it’s also a very important export market for Northwest Pears and California table grapes.

They’re also partnering with the Mexican Secretary of Health for the first time.

LYONS: We’ve been taking this property, going into retail stores with activities and point of sale materials and really getting kids and their parents excited about Washington Apples through this Lazy Town connection.

That’s today’s Fruit Grower Report. I’m Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
