Looking at ways to reduce expense, Washington state’s Farm Service Agency is moving to electronic notifications via email helping to conserve resources and save taxpayer dollars. Washington state’s Farm Service Agency Executive Director Judy Olson explains.

Olson: “We are in the process of sending out our final newsletter, right now. Our final mailed newsletter to inform producers. But we will be going to an electronic newsletter and producers can subscribe to that either through their county office or our website.”

This will save the state’s FSA approximately $69,000 a year in printing and postage. FSA wants to be sure that producers are aware of the change and sign up for the new GovDelivery system which will provide notices, newsletters and electronic reminders instead of a hard copy through the mail.

Olson: “We will ask our county offices’ to keep printed newsletters on the counters -- a few so that producers that drop in can pick one up, if they don’t have computer access. We are also very anxious for producers to sign up for this newsletter because that would give us the ability to determine which ones do have computers or not. The other thing we are doing is calling all the farm organizations and asking for their assistance when it is time to get the word out about about a deadline or a new program sign up.”

Olson also reminds producers that the sign up for the Conservation Reserve Program or CRP begins on Monday, March 12 and ends on April 6th.
