2-20 SS Rhett 1
Shark week.
This week we’re going to follow Capt. Rhett Morris as he goes through a story that will put goosebumps on anybody who listens. Capt. Rhett operates a charter service out of Punta Gorda, Florida and goes the extra mile by skin diving in the shallow flats in order to locate schools of fish that his clients want to catch. So you’ll have to listen every day in order to catch the spine tingling ending. Here’s Capt. Morris: “I was scouting a reef to see what kind of fish had moved in. I like to go out and do some reconnaissance work and figure out what is hanging where so that when I take my charters out we can get people on the best action possible. I was down in 18 feet of water, I was out there with a friend, we were down surveying this area, checking out the fish, and all of a sudden I started to get that heebie-jeebies. I knew something was around but it was very bad visibility, maybe 10 feet or make that 5 feet. All of a sudden I realized that there is a very large creature in the water with me and I cannot tell what it is. I am hoping dolphin or porpoise. I am backed up against the reef now and I am watching to see if I can get a positive ID on what this is. I make out of shape coming towards me and I think to myself, given the diameter of this shape, it has to be a big loggerhead sea turtle or a Manatee because I am knowing there couldn’t be any bull sharks in the area that would remotely be this big. As I am thinking this I make out the outline of the mouth of this shark as it begins to open it. Is drifting in directly toward my chest level position.
