1-31 SS Did a wolf attack?
Did a wolf really attack a woman in northern Idaho’s woods?
Yesterday we read an e-mail from someone who claimed that his mother, who was a professional hunting guide, was attacked by a wolf while she was camping in the woods. The story claimed she shot the Wolf. I couldn’t verify whether it was true or not so I called now retired fish and game Wolf expert Ed Bangs who I have had on the show many times. His response. “Wolves are no threat to people. I think there’s a movie out right now about people who get attacked by wolves but those are just fairy tales. Wolves are pretty harmless actually. They can be dangerous if they get habituated to humans, by people feeding them food, but there is absolutely no reason to be afraid of wild wolves if you are in the woods. Fairytales portray it differently but if you know anybody who has actually been around wolves like I have in Alaska and down here, nobody is afraid of them. That is very unusual because all other large carnivores in the world will attack people but wolves don’t do that. It is mainly because wolves are social learners and they are very afraid of new things and so a person is so different from anything they normally hunt that they can watch you, run around you, I’ve even taken pups out of dens, there is no reason to ever be afraid of wolves in the wild.
