Once again UC Davis provides cutting edge research for thehorse Industry. I’m Susan Allen welcome to today’s Open Range, back after the break. Horse owners wisely fear sedating their equine companions because there is much more danger for horses that are put under using anesthesia then say dogs, cats or even humans for that matter .  The equine species are not only more prone to negative side effects but certain horses, especially older animals, can succumb during heavy sedation or severely injure  themselves going under or coming out of it.  Thus a UC Davis research team lead by Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Robert Brosnan have come up with a new combination of drugs that reduces the adverse reaction that occurs when propofol a very popular/affordible anesthesia is used alone.  We humans tolerate propofol well, the last time I went under I went to sleep instantly, but when propofol is used in horses it causes the animal to paddle it’s legs while under sedation, creating potential injury not only for the horse but team of people treating it.  So the team at UC Davis combined this popular drug with another and discovered that horses can now be safely put to sleep.  In a nut shell the researchers capitalized on the positive qualities of using propofol, being it’s recovery time and virtually eliminated the nasty side effect of kicking, giving horse owners now more anesthesia options.  To help veterinarians  throughout the country receive new technology and information from UC Davis be it anesthesia or cutting edge stem cell research, The school is now  offering  a veterinarian APP s for Iphone’s.  It’s an exciting time to be an equine vet
