Miss America On Agriculture

Welcome to Open Range, I’m Susan Allen. Stay tuned because after the break I’ll check in with our field reporter, Greg Martin for the AgriBeef Minute.

I’m Greg Martin with today’s AgriBeef Minute. The Miss America pageant has been crowning young ladies for 90 years and the most recent is Teresa Scanlan, an 18-year old Nebraskan that loves to talk about agriculture.

SCANLAN: To me it means the difference between prosperity and disaster in our country. To me it means the difference between forgetting our roots and what is most important to our country or holding on to that thin green line and protecting it, protecting the heartland of the country. To me it means protecting a way of life and a livelihood for many farmers and those involved in agriculture in the midwest and helping others understand the importance of that.

She has lent her voice to the Real Farmers Real Food program though a public service announcement.

SCANLAN: Hello, I’m Teresa Scanlan, Miss America 2011. Not everybody farms but everybody has to eat. Most Americans don’t realize how essential and crucial agriculture is to our lives and to our economy. We’re used to our grocery stores and kitchens being full of food but many people don’t get that it’s because of farmers and ranchers that we continue to be the bread basket of the world. America has just 2,010 full time farms. That’s it. And being from an agricultural community I know these aren’t large corporations with giant bank accounts. These are small businesses with huge overhead expenses and a history of modest profits. I’ve made it a top priority during my time as Miss America to help people understand how farmers and ranchers continuously strive to better serve their animals, the land and consumers. Please join me in celebrating our safe and plentiful food supply today and everyday thanks to the hard work of American farmers and ranchers.

I’m Greg Martin and that’s today’s AgriBeef Minute.

Thanks Greg. Don’t forget Greg will be back each Wednesday with the AgriBeef Minute. Agri Beef Co - Real Families, Great People, Exceptional Beef. I’m Susan Allen.
