Time is Ripe

Time is Ripe! I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

Pear harvest is wrapping up and the folks at Pear Bureau Northwest have come up with a great way of promoting pears. Cristie Mather, Director of Communications for Pear Bureau explains.

MATHER: We’re embarking on a national consumer advertising campaign and the biggest part of that is our print ad. We have a print ad that is appearing from November to February in magazines like “Cooking Light” and “Eating Well” and “Martha Stewart’s Whole Living” magazine and “Weight Watchers” magazine and in support of our ad campaign we’re also doing an 8 city tour.

Those cities are Portland, Seattle, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, Philadelphia, Boston and New York. In each city they hold 2 events...

MATHER: One is a public consumer event where we just do the pear tasting at a local grocery store or kind of a heavy traffic tourist area. While we’re at those consumer events we’re taking video and tweeting and we’re recording consumers reactions to to tasting a perfectly ripe pear.

They also then hold a private media event at a top restaurant in the city to help educate media writers and bloggers. In addition Mather says they are using their social media to grab more consumers attention.

MATHER: We wanted to have a way for them to engage as well and so that’s why we created our sweepstakes. This is a national sweepstakes and the deadline to enter is December 15th. They have a chance to win a trip for two to one of those cities and to eat at the restaurant of the chefs that we are visiting in one of those cities.

That’s today’s Fruit Grower Report. I’m Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
