Nematode Seminar Offered to Idaho Wheat Growers. The Idaho Wheat Commission will be presenting a web-based grower education seminar (webinar) tomorrow at 9:00 in the morning. The webinar will be approximately one hour. Guest Presenter Dr. Dick Smileywho is a Plant Pathologist at Oregon State University will discuss methods to control the Cereal Cyst Nematode…as in wheat. Here’s Tereasa Waterman, spokesperson for The Idaho Wheat Commission: “Dick Smiley from Oregon State University has been doing studies on nematodes and so we have asked him to do a presentation to our growers to tell them what to look for in their fields”.
Nematodes puncture root cells and damage underground plant tissues, which reduces plant vigor, causes lesions, and predisposes plants to infection by root-infecting fungi. Damaged wheat plants are less capable of extracting soil water and exhibit stress and wilting earlier than undamaged plants as soil moisture becomes limiting for plant growth.
