10-12 SS Ed's Favorite
If you spent several decades working for Fish and Game and if you were an avid hunter and fisherman, I wonder if you would have a favorite hunting or fishing story? Well of course you would. Will do the digging when we return.
Ed Bangs is one of my favorite outdoor guys. For years, he was a specialist in the state of Montana regarding re-introduction of wolves. He retired with great aplomb and I have kept up with them. Call him up last week and asked him to recall his favorite hunting story. “My favorite hunt is on Kodiak island in Alaska. They introduced Sitka black tailed deer there a long time ago, they are not native to the island but the population is getting very high, very cool place to hunt, because you are on the ocean often or you can see the ocean, there are huge brown bears walking around everywhere so that makes it pretty exciting. The deer are pretty numerous or can be, and very tasty so it is a great hunt. I have probably done that kind 10 times or close to it. It’s a bow hunt and it is an incredible time. I remember one time we rented a cabin and we had a little skiff and we would hunt the shoreline and in the evening we would dig butter clams and then have Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and fresh cooked deer ribs over an open fire. I had some incredible encounters with bears, nobody was injured, at least humans, so yeah, very fun.
