9-9 IAN Sid's Onions

Borrowing from an old cliché in aviation, there is an old farmer’s and bold farmers, but no such thing as old bold farmers.

Last year we talked to multi-crop farmer Sid Freeman and he was in high cotton… make that high onions. The price on onions at the time was great and so, I thought along with a lot of other people that I knew would be a great bet this year. Sid Freeman is conservative and smart. Listen up: “The onion industry did pretty well last year, therefore, more onions were planted this year. The market is reflecting a bit of a glut in the supply. Hopefully the onions on the open market will hold long enough in storage to not deteriorate and hopefully we can stay in storage long enough until the price comes back up. Now our personal situation is that we increased a little bit, maybe 10% but we did contract heavily. We were under the impression that this was going to happen. We are not going to have a whole lot on the open market. All of our red onions are going to be on the open market but probably 80 to 85% of our yellows are contracted already.
