9-7 IAN Sid Crop BTU's
British thermal units or BTU’s are a fancy way of saying heat. So having had a very cold and wet spring, most of you may remember, a lot of farmers are saying bring on the BTUs. We need them to finish off our crops.
Farmer Sid Freeman and I had a very nice conversation the other day about all kinds of things, including the fact that he is doing fine with his farm despite being laid up with broken legs due to a snowboarding injury last December. But I digress. Sid said that his onion and other crops are on schedule and loving the hot weather. “The onion crop is not done yet. Harvest is not here yet in the Treasure Valley. That cold wet spring put a crimp in us. We were quite a bit later getting planted them what we wanted to be but it was cool and wet and there wasn’t much you could do about that. We are hoping for a warm, dry fall. That is for all of the crops so that the maturity can continue on and get to where they need to be for quality.” So far so good on the warm, dry fall. “Yes it is really good that last week we really needed to heat in the form of hundred degree days. At this point in time the heat is doing good things for us. We need those BTUs.
