8-23 FB Fumigation

Soil Fumigation Training to be Held in Idaho. We have had a lot of recent discussions regarding what I certainly see as an increasing resistance  to herbicides on the part of  weeds embedded in row crops.  I’m not going to try and tell you I have done an immense amount of research on this topic, but I will tell you that everyone from weeds scientists at the University of Idaho to producers to my very own eyes looking at fields suggests that this is true.

Well, apparently the Idaho State Department of Agriculture and several soil fumigation companies are trying to fight this battle as well. They are going to sponsor free seminars this fall to inform and train growers, soil fumigation applicators, handlers and workers on the latest requirements for applying soil fumigants.  The ISDA is providing four (4) recertification credits for certified applicators attending the seminar. Here is ISDA spokesperson Bob Spencer: “A lot of the row crops here in the Treasure Valley and South Central Idaho and Eastern Idaho like potatoes, sugar beets, onions all require soil fumigation. That is for controlling weeds, diseases, insects, nematodes, things like that.

The trainings will take place in Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Burley, Twin Falls, Nampa and Ontario, Oregon.  All soil fumigation applicators, handlers, workers, fieldmen, dealers, consultants, growers and other associated persons are encouraged to attend one of these trainings.  This training will provide sufficient information to satisfy the label mandated requirement for handler training and help users of soil fumigants to comply with the new label changes.
