Farmers markets selected for beer and wine tastings

Washington Ag Today July 29, 2011 The Washington State Liquor Control Board has selected the ten farmers markets that are invited to participate in a program that allows wine and beer tastings at farmers markets. Board spokesman Brian Smith says it’s the implementation of legislation passed earlier this year.

Smith: “So we looked through to see which would be the qualifying markets in Washington. There were 59 of them. And of those 59 we notified and tried to gauge their interest, who wants to participate. Overall we had 40 that wanted to participate. Then we set up seven geographic regions. We wanted to be able to have farmers markets from around the state be able to be part of this pilot. And of those seven we gave various choices that were going to be pulled from a box. And we had a representative of the Washington State Farmers Market Association pull the choices randomly out of the box.”

The tentative list of participating markets in eastern Washington are the Liberty Lake Farmers Market, Pasco Farmers Market and Wenatchee Valley Farmers Market. Among those on the Westside are the Pike Place Market, West Seattle, Vancouver and Proctor Farmers Markets.

The pilot will run from September 1st 2011 to November 1st of 2012.

By the way, August is Washington Wine Month at state liquor stores. They will broaden and diversify the selection of Washington wines available.
