Oh my, the bloggers were buzzing after a recap of the speech Dr. Jude Capper an animal scientist from Washington State University gave recently at the Cattle Feeders Business Summit in Denver. I’m Susan Allen, Open Range returns after the break. Dr. Jude Capper a animal scientist from WSU ruffled a few feathers in the sustainability crowd, including natural and grass fed beef advocates when she explained how modern cattle producers uses considerably less land, water and feed in 2007 compared to 1977 while producing 131 percent more beef not to mention reducing manure, emissions and total carbon footprint of cattle nearly 20 percent. In contrast if the US switched to strictly natural beef, 14.4 million more animals would be needed plus an additional 131 million acres of land in the good doctor’s words (“equal to seventy-five percent of Texas). Now Capper states she has no” beef “ with the grass-fed industry but takes issue with activists that say natural or grass- fed production would reduce environmental impact or improve sustainability”. She warned her audience to be aware of faulty facts from anti-meat activists that tout mistruths provided to them by groups with names like, Water Footprint Network and to visit her bovidiva blog to monitor their chatter. http://bovidiva.com/
