Fruit of the Month

Fruit of the Month

Fruit of the Month. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

June is here and that should mean cherries here in the northwest very soon. Jill Le Brasseur, Communications Specialist with the Produce for Better Health Foundation says that they have chosen cherries as their fruit of the month.

Le BRASSEUR: Our mission is to promote eating more fruits and vegetables and we’ve learned through our surveys, particularly our mom survey that we do annually, that people need more information about how to use and prepare different fruits and vegetables. They feel they don’t have enough of a repertoire of recipes to use a great variety.

She says it’s a great way to bring attention to those fruits that are in season. They send out a press release each month.

Le BRASSEUR: That is available on our Fruits and Veggies More Matters website, www.fruitsandveggiesmorematters.org. All the recipes that are available via the fruit and veggie of the month are in our searchable database there. And so if you simply go to the cooking section, type in your favorite ingredient; type in cherries and you’ll see a listing of every single recipe that includes cherries.

The recipes include some interesting variations for your enjoyment.

Le BRASSEUR: We want to just increase awareness of different ways to use fruits and vegetables also and you’ll notice our cherry recipe that goes with the fruit of the month involves them in a cooked preparation. Most people are used to eating cherries as a snack or as a dessert just in their raw form.

That’s today’s Fruit Grower Report. I’m Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
