Seven common potato types star in new video series

Farm and Ranch Report May 18, 2011 The United States Potato Board recently debuted an exciting new video series titled “Potato Types and Tips.”

Molly Connors, co-chair of the Potato Board’s Domestic Marketing Committee, says there are seven videos hosted by celebrity nutritionist Katie Cavuto Boyle.

Connors: “And basically she is taking the best characteristics of each of the types of potatoes and showing you kind of fun and interactive ways to cook with the recipes and also telling you how you should store them and what defects you should look for when shopping for them. The seven types of potatoes that we are currently promoting are russets, reds, whites, yellows, purples, petites and fingerlings.”

Connors says there are very good reasons for improving consumer understanding about potato types.

Connors: “Our consumer segmentation that we did in the fall of 2010 found that consumers that are eating more types of potatoes were also serving them more often in the household. And also our aptitude and usage study recorded that our target audience “Linda“ reported that recipes that use different types of potatoes would in fact motivate her to purchase potatoes more often.”

And increasing demand for growers is the bottom line.

Connors: “Absolutely.”

The videos are available free for industry use and can be seen at
