5-19 FB Wolves If & When

How much is too many wolves? That’s a question that is being asked by Idaho legislators  as well as Fish and Game Officials. Here’s a direct quote from an article in the Idaho Statesman written by Rocky Barker.  “Idaho’s Republican lawmakers know what they want to do now that the state has regained control of wolves.

“We need to put as much pressure as we can on those wolves, pin them down and drive them back into the wilderness,” said Republican Sen. Monty Pearce, chairman of the Senate Resources and Environment Committee. “I think we need to thin them down rapidly.”

Now it is thought by officials at Fish and Game that there are about 1,000 wolves in Idaho give or take a few,  but the  absolutely official number is 705.  Bear in mind that Mr. Pearce  is also a rancher  as in livestock, as in vulnerable to wolves.  You can understand why this rancher from New Plymouth wants to have a hunting season opened as of now. The question is will we have a hunting season out all? Here’s Fish and Game’s Mike Kecklar: “Oh we’re going to hold  a hunt. There are some areas where we do know that wolves have caused extensive damage to native big-game herds, they’ve gotten into trouble with livestock.” So now it is not a question of if but a question of when.
