4-21 FB Fish Appetite

FOR THE FIRST TIME, Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 specifies how much fish we each should eat for maximum health and heart-health benefits, and it is…8 ounces a week. But most Americans eat less than half that, according to the guide issued jointly by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Gary Fornshell, University of Idaho Extension educator explains why this may be the case: “According to the 2010 dietary guidelines, we are only eating about 44% of what is recommended  as far as seafood is concerned. I think there are a variety of reasons one of which is just our culture. We are not a seafood eating nation. But certainly perception and confusion over the benefits and risks of seafood consumption have contributed to lower seafood consumption. Also lack of confidence and knowledge in purchasing seafood being able to determine if it is fresh or not and being able to prepare it are also factors  leading to lower seafood consumption.”
