 Putting Poppies in the Gas Tank. One man’s quest to tap Afghanistan’s taboo biofuelBack in the fall of 2008, Michael Bester and a business partner, both Army veterans doing contract work in Afghanistan, hit on the equivalent of the counterinsurgency’s trifecta: a way to improve the lives of ordinary Afghans, eliminate the illegal opium trade, and take the Taliban’s money. The two guys had been in villages where children were dying because they didn’t have proper medicine, because they didn’t have refrigerators. Light up the villages, and perhaps you could empower Afghans to resist the Taliban. And the fuel? One compelling option was the plentiful poppies that stoke the Taliban’s lucrative drug trade. Why not turn them into biodiesel instead? I asked John Crockett of the Idaho Department of Energy about that idea.

“ I’m sure that would work. I don’t know the oil content of them and how good they would be for making bio diesel but I’m sure it makes better bio diesel learned those drugs. You know there’s no reason not to do that. Certainly bio diesel is a better product than diesel fuel.”

 Here’s a perfect world for you. Instead of injecting heroin into the vein put in the gas tank. Is that beautiful or what?
