State's organic ag saw declines in 2010

Washington Ag Today March 29, 2011 The number of certified organic producers, organic acreage and farm gate sales in Washington state all declined in 2010. Those findings are from data gathered by the Washington State University Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources and contained in the report “Current Status of Organic Agriculture in Washington State.”

The number of certified producers dropped by 18 last year to 735. Certified organic land area fell six percent to just under 102-thousand acres. Declines were seen in both eastern and western Washington.

Sales data lag a year but for 2009 reported organic farm gate sales totaled 210.7 million dollars, down 36 million from 2008. Most of the decline was seen on farms with over one-million dollars in sales while smaller farm’s sales were stable.

Now the report from Stockland Livestock.

This is Jack McQuiness with Stockland Livestock here in Davenport. 500 cattle on our market here today. The cow market stronger. We were a couple, three dollars higher. Had lot of the cows back in 80 dollar money. Top of 97 for the big heavy beef bulls. Feeder cattle fully steady. A lot of good green grass calves on the market. All breed bull sale this Friday. We will start at one o’clock pm. We have 55 in the catalog. Big special feeder sale next Monday April 4th. Thanks for listening. Stockland Livestock in Davenport.

Thanks. Jack.
