12-13 IAN Sugar Beet Death

Stecklings…do they live or go to the gas chamber. I’m DS

As a story in magicvalley.com reports, “This time the federal judge in California really means it. The stecklings must be destroyed. In his Nov. 30 decision, District Judge Jeffrey S. White ordered that genetically modified stecklings be “removed from the ground.”  That was widely interpreted as an order to destroy the stecklings since the root stock is not yet viable. The word “steckling” is believed to be of German origin and means “small root.” The term is used most often in sugar beet seed production. So, there’s a field full of stecklings somewhere that a judge wants to destroy. But I talked to Mark Duffin of the Idaho Sugarbeet Growers Association and listen to snippets of the conversation: “(David) So that means that the stecklings live to see another day at lest ‘till the 23rd. (Mark, laughter) That’s right.”
