Hort Meeting Coming Up

Hort Meeting Coming Up

Hort Convention Coming Up. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

If you have been thinking of attending this year’s annual Hort convention in Yakima, Bruce Grim says you will have register at the door.

GRIM: We had as of yesterday something over 1,050 registrations; an additional about 200 for the Spanish language so it looks like it will be very well attended. We normally sell for the Tuesday night banquet before we head down to Yakima, we normally have somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 or 125. We were at 207 yesterday.

Grim says that one of this years topics will be sustainability.

GRIM: One of the main things that we’re dealing with here has to do with grower sustainability. Sustainable farming really is a question that is more a term of art than it is of science. For example this is the 80th my family has been in the orchard business consecutively and in one sense that makes us sustainable, Lehman Brothers was in for 152 years before they went upside down so sustainable is a term of art, not science.

The trade show is a great place to see some of the new ideas in the fruit industry.

GRIM: You name it from a growers standpoint and it will be there. Anything from packing equipment, orchard equipment; I think there’s some exciting things going on with platform and pruning and picking, harvesting. Anything you can possibly think about I think the trade show covers it from A to Z.

The annual Washington Hort meeting and trade show gets under way tomorrow at the Yakima Convention Center and the Sun Dome.

That’s today’s Fruit Grower Report. I’m Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
