Checking the December Weather

Checking on the December Weather. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

I’m up to my ankles in snow and ice as I’m sure a lot of folks are here in the northwest and wondering what just might be in order for the month of December. So let’s check in with staff meteorologist Tim Creek.

CREEK: The weather for the month of December is going to be colder and wetter than average. Right now I’m not looking for any significant arctic air dropping into the area. If it does occur I think it would be during the later part of the month but it does look like we will see a trough of low pressure along or just off the northwest coast much of the time which will tend to send a series of weather disturbances through the region, each producing the potential for snow. Kind of like the pattern we’re in right now. I would anticipate during the month of December we’re going to have numerous days where we’ll see generally light amounts of precipitation and I think there’s going to be a couple of storms at least where we have more wide spread 4 or 5 inch snowfall amounts if not some greater snow amounts. Really it looks like the pattern is not going to be too bad here through the first half of the month slightly cooler than average, maybe slightly wetter than average or lets say a persistent threat of light snow showers but I really think it will pick up again towards the middle of the month and heading towards the Christmas holiday - isn’t that good news.

Lovely. Thanks Tim. Be sure if you are planning to travel you do call ahead to check out road conditions.
