12-3 FB Ethanol & Dairy

Ethanol plant and dairies a good mix.

In a recent chat with Idaho Director of Energy, Paul Kjellander, he pointed out the benefits of ethanol production to the dairy industry: “We certainly don’t want to hamper the ability of those in the ag sector to make money and the most money possible. It is an issue that we have to look at long term as to what’s the best venture for those in the ag sector. So the key now is how to take that off the drawing board and put it into practice. We are seeing some positive things happen in the arena of ethanol in general as we see the once shuttered plant back on board in Burley. When you consider that 100% of our transportation fuel we have to import, to be able to produce 10% ethanol, that’s good and that facility in Burley can produce all the ethanol we need in the state to get a 10% blend. One of our advantages in ethanol production is that we can have Burley pop up in the midst of the dairy industry. You can take that wet meal that’s one of the by-products and feed it to the cattle without having to pay the extra money to dry it and have it shipped in.”
