Wheat growers and the lame duck session
Farm and Ranch November 22, 2010 Just what the lame duck session of Congress gets accomplished remains to be seen but the National Association of Wheat Growers has several items it would like to see action on. Association CEO Dana Peterson talked about them during a visit to the northwest last week. Peterson: “In the lame duck we are looking at to continue pushing some of our initiatives. There is an initiative to limit the ability of EPA to really put out a lot of their regulations. We are working on that. We are very interested in the trade agreements and whether those might be able to get to Congress so they can go through Congress and we could increase our trade and hopefully have some good tangible benefits for our economy. We are also looking at some tax discussions happening. And with regards to agriculture the estate tax is a big issue for many growers across the country so we are watching that and trying to push for some tax relief there.” Of course Congress has yet to pass appropriation bills too. Peterson: “I don’t know if they will do that or if they will extend it, but we have until December 3rd to make a decision there.” Then there is the issue of earmarks, which several agricultural research projects of importance to the northwest are categorized as.
