Milk production up in Idaho. I’m DS…

The Associated Press recently quoted figures from the National Agricultural Statistics Service showing that the latest national farm figures indicate that milk production in Idaho continues to increase. Idaho dairies produced a total of 1.5 billion pounds of milk in August which was an increase of .2 billion pounds over the month of July and 7.8% greater than the amount produced in August of 2009. Executive Director of the Idaho Dairymens Association, Bob Naerbout isn’t impressed: “Dairymen who lost a huge amount of equity last year were just about break evens and they’re doing everything they can to recover some of their lost equity. That coupled with really good weather and good feed sources.”

Apparently there are good feed sources given that the National Agricultural Statistics Service also reports growth in the number of dairy cows around the state. In August farmers reported an average of 573,000 cows which is up 4000 from July and up 25,000 from a year ago in the same time period.
