The election and Congressional ag committees

Farm and Ranch Report November 1, 2010 Just one more day and this year’s mid-term election will be over. Depending upon the outcome there could be changes in the leadership of U.S. House and Senate ag committees. Should Republicans take control of the House, Minnesota Democrat Collin Peterson would be out as Agriculture Committee chairman. Oklahoma Republican Frank Lucas could be selected as the next chairman, which he would readily accept.

Lucas: “I am a farmer and rancher by trade. Me academic training is a degree in agricultural economics from Oklahoma State University. There is nothing that is more of a go, more of a responsibility, more of a challenge for someone of my personal background, with my educational background than to craft or to be chairman when a farm bill is crafted. So, yes given the opportunity by the Republican Caucus when we win the majority I very much would like to have the opportunity to step up to that all important process.”

Current Senate Agriculture Committee Chair Blanche Lincoln is in a tough re-election race and if she were to lose but the Democrats stay in control in the Senate, Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow could be her likely successor.

If the Republicans win control of the U.S. Senate then Republican ranking member Saxby Chambliss of Georgia could again be the Agriculture Committee Chairman.

Just who will serve on the ag committees is also subject to change and there will be new members of Congress that will need educating about agriculture.
