Winter wheat seeding progress and crop emergence

Farm and Ranch October 14, 2010 The pace of winter wheat seeding in Washington, Oregon and Idaho is running above the five year average for now in all three states. In Washington 87 percent of the crop is planted, in Oregon 69 percent and in Idaho 82 percent. USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey says nationally winter wheat seeding is also ahead of average.

Rippey: “Seventy percent planted by October 10th, slightly ahead of the five year average of 68% and last year‘s number of 65%. The winter wheat emergence now 38% very close to the five year average of 39% and last year‘s number of 39%. Emergence has not yet began in California, North Carolina. This is not unusual. On the high end Washington state leads the way with 71% emerged.”

The five year average for emergence in Washington is 58 percent. In Idaho 41 percent of the winter wheat is up, in Oregon 34 percent, both above the five year average for now.

USDA’s Rippey says the U.S. corn harvest is now past the halfway mark at 51 percent complete at the start of this week.

Rippey: “That is well ahead of the five year average of 30% and last year‘s number of 13%.”

The U.S. barley harvest still wasn’t quite wrapped up to start the week. Montana still had nine percent of its crop to cut.

In Washington the potato harvest has advanced to 71 percent complete, in Idaho 63 percent of the spuds have been dug.
