10-15 IAN La Nina

10-15 IAN La Nina

Possible great news in terms of long term weather forecast for Idaho farmers and water. I’m David Sparks. That story’s next.OK everyone, here comes a weather lesson. The Old Farmer’s Almanac says this next year a weak La Nina will impact U.S. weather..

La Niña describes an extensive cooling of the waters in the tropical eastern Pacific Ocean. In that region of the Eastern Pacific, the prevailing trade winds are easterly. The lower-level winds drag or push the warm surface water westwards towards Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia. The ocean stirring upwells deep cooler waters to the surface along the South American coast. North America typically feels the effects of La Niña during the winter and early spring. Wetter-than-normal conditions occur across the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia and Alaska.

So there we go. Lots of water this winter. Here’s Meteorologist Jessica Brooks: “The forecast is pretty confident that we’ll have a La Nina through the early part of 2011. The strength is still in question but right now we’re thinking moderate.” Hey we’ll take all the precip we can for spring of 2011.
