10-12 FB Quagga Scare

About 3 weeks ago a dead quagga musselwas found on a boat that was in Bear Lake, southeast of Pocatello. Bear Lake crosses the border between Idaho and Utah. The boat harboring the invasive quagga mussel took to Bear Lake and while it seems the quaggas had expired  before the boat launched, the mere fact that it was found raises questions about Idaho’s capacity remain free of these pests that can be devastating. Last year I had the same conversation with Amy Ferriter, who is the invasive species program coordinator with the Idaho State Department of Agriculture. I called her up again and here’s her response: “Our Franklin inspection station caught that boat and it was decontaminated. We have pretty rigorous sampling results and all results are negative.”

And that’s a relief to everyone from boaters, to fishermen to ag producers and ISDA officials alike.
