Late grain harvest brings resurvey from USDA
Washington Ag Today October 4, 2010 A report last week that said Washington farmers produced 147.9 million bushels of wheat this year may not be the final word on the state’s 2010 crop. The late harvest meant there were still a lot of uncut spring cereal grain acres in the Northwest and Northern Plains when the Agricultural Statistics Service did its survey in early September. So Hubert Hamer of NASS says; Hamer: “We will do a re-contact of all small grain producers who indicated they had unharvested acres during the September data collection window.” Hamer says the resurvey will be conducted this week and next with the results included in the November crop production report. USDA’s Small Grains Summary report last week said that 85 percent of Washington’s winter wheat crop was white wheat compared to 80 percent in 2009. The state’s spring wheat crop this year was 51 percent white wheat varieties, unchanged from last year. A coalition of more than 150 organizations has again written President Obama urging a solution to the ongoing dispute with Mexico regarding trucks on U.S. roads. Mexico was allowed by international trade rules to impose tariffs on U.S. products because of the dispute. In the letter to the President the Alliance to Keep U.S. Jobs said that, despite occasional optimistic remarks from Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood suggesting there are efforts ongoing to end the dispute, no tangible progress has been announced and the Mexican Embassy recently stated that no proposal has yet to be presented to the Mexican government for consideration.
