Governor serves up fresh Washington fries in Ho Chi Minh City

Washington Ag Today September 24, 2010 Washington Governor Chris Gregoire’s Trade Mission to China and Vietnam began heading home yesterday. But before the group left from Vietnam, Matt Harris, Director of Trade for the Washington State Potato Commission spoke by phone from Ho Chi Minh City.

Harris: “We spent the last week meeting with importers and exporters and trying to look at bringing in or exporting our fresh potatoes to Vietnam. We currently already export our French fries to Vietnam and the governor in cooperation with KFC we set up two fry promotions that were just phenomenal. Very open arms and bringing the governor in to talk about how great our Washington state French fries are. With that we were able to generate a lot of media exposure and it was just a win, win situation with the governor while we are here in Vietnam.”

Governor Gregoire pitched right in.

Harris: “Yeah, she was helping to hand out our great Washington state French fries.”

The 80-member trade delegation started in China last week.

Harris: “And we spent a day with the governor in Beijing. Then we flew into Shanghai. Rounded out the tour there and flew into Hanoi on the 19th of September. We spent a few days in Hanoi and then flew down to Ho Chi Minh City.”

Washington Ag Department Director Dan Newhouse was also on the trade mission.
