General CRP sign up deadline fast approaching

General CRP sign up deadline fast approaching

Washington Ag Today August 17, 2010 There is concern at the Washington Farm Service Agency state office about the how the general sign up for the Conservation Reserve Program is going. And Rod Hamilton with the state FSA office says the sign up deadline is coming up Friday, August 27th.

Hamilton: “We certainly suspect that we are having producers who either aren‘t aware of sign up because we sent a newsletter out shortly before it started or have not had time to come in because they are in harvest. Unfortunately the sign up got delayed due to some environmental reviews that had to be done in advance. It is short because we are trying to get these applications filed and contracts approved by the end of the fiscal year September 30th. So we are tying to cram a whole lot of activity in a short amount of time and unfortunately that landed right during harvest in our state.”

To sign up you are going to have to visit your local FSA office but Hamilton says you may have some flexibility on who that could be.

Hamilton: “It only takes one producer on the farm, either the owner or the operator, to come in and initiate the CRP offer. So, those people who have maybe landlords living out of the area, they are worried about getting their signatures, that isn‘t required during sign up. So just one person can initiate the application.”

Again, whether its new land being offered, or expiring CRP contract land seeking re-enrollment, the end of the business day August 27th is the sign up deadline.
